Building a Fire
In WW1 they would be given a tin filled with charcoal paper, a steel ring, dead brush, and a sharp rock. They would take the steel ring and wrap it around their fingers and take the sharpest part of the rock and strike it on the steel (at an angle) to make a spark. You would have the charcoal paper underneath so it would catch the spark. Whenever the spark has caught you would quickly but carefully put the charcoal paper in a bushel of dead brush and blow until the fire comes out the front and they you would be able to grab the wood and sticks to make a real fire.
